SUMMARY:Hidden Hazards Webinar Series: Understanding Today's Evolving Addictions: Toxicology 102
DESCRIPTION:Gas station drugs are a category of substances that are sold legally at gas stations or convenience stores throughout the United States and are typically marketed as legal alternatives to illicit drugs like marijuana\, cocaine\, or MDMA. However\, these substances can be highly dangerous\, as their chemical composition and potency can vary greatly. Furthermore\, testing for gas station drugs can be challenging due to their varying chemical compositions and the fact that they are often not well understood by users or even some medical professionals. This presentation will discuss the various types of substances available and various testing methods to help identify misuse. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDiscuss the presence and dangers of ‘gas station’ drugs – the growth and availability of multiple toxic substances without the need for Rx or ID to purchase.\n\n\n\nIdentify the ability to detect and test for some of these substances.\n\n\n\nDescribe the characteristics\, intended effects\, and potential adverse outcomes of common gas station drugs to enhance recognition and assessment of misuse in clinical and community settings.

SUMMARY:From Maternal Landscape to Action: Using SBIRT to Support Pregnant and Postpartum Alabamians
DESCRIPTION:Pregnant and postpartum Alabamians are living and parenting in environments where substance use\, depression\, and domestic violence can put their health and their babies’ health at risk. This webinar starts with the maternal health landscape in our state\, then shows how SBIRT (Screening\, Brief Intervention\, and Referral to Treatment) gives providers a practical way to identify these risks early and connect patients to support. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn how to screen sensitively and effectively\, use brief intervention techniques in short encounters\, and connect patients/clients to treatment and support through warm handoffs. We’ll also cover how to build SBIRT into your existing workflows\, including team roles\, documentation\, and common barriers. \n\n\n\nThis session is designed for providers\, nurses\, community health workers\, social workers and community organization staff who serve pregnant and postpartum Alabamians. No prior SBIRT experience is needed for this webinar. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe key trends in maternal health in Alabama\, including the role of substance use\, depression\, and domestic violence.\n\n\n\nExplain how SBIRT (Screening\, Brief Intervention\, and Referral to Treatment) responds to these drivers in perinatal care.\n\n\n\nIdentify validated screening approaches for substance use\, depression\, and domestic violence in pregnant and postpartum patients.

SUMMARY:Stop Judging; Start Healing Stigma Summits
DESCRIPTION:Stigma is a set of negative beliefs held by a group or society and creates significant challenges for individuals facing substance use disorder (SUD). The World Health Organization recognizes stigma as a harmful force\, hindering treatment and recovery efforts. Alarmingly\, public perceptions often view individuals with SUD more negatively than those with mental health disorders\, perpetuating the destructive cycle of this disease. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Alabama\, stigma serves as a major barrier to seeking treatment and deeply impacts how individuals perceive themselves. This summit is dedicated to breaking down these barriers by dispelling myths\, sharing evidence-based practices\, and shining a spotlight on stigma as a critical public health issue. Join us in fostering understanding\, compassion\, and meaningful change.
