From Maternal Landscape to Action: Using SBIRT to Support Pregnant and Postpartum Alabamians

November 30 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Pregnant and postpartum Alabamians are living and parenting in environments where substance use, depression, and domestic violence can put their health and their babies’ health at risk. This webinar starts with the maternal health landscape in our state, then shows how SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) gives providers a practical way to identify these risks early and connect patients to support.

You’ll learn how to screen sensitively and effectively, use brief intervention techniques in short encounters, and connect patients/clients to treatment and support through warm handoffs. We’ll also cover how to build SBIRT into your existing workflows, including team roles, documentation, and common barriers.

This session is designed for providers, nurses, community health workers, social workers and community organization staff who serve pregnant and postpartum Alabamians. No prior SBIRT experience is needed for this webinar.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe key trends in maternal health in Alabama, including the role of substance use, depression, and domestic violence.
  2. Explain how SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) responds to these drivers in perinatal care.
  3. Identify validated screening approaches for substance use, depression, and domestic violence in pregnant and postpartum patients.
This webinar is free to attend.
