Statement of Need
In Alabama, there is a concerning increase in deaths related to opioids, stimulants, synthetic drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. Unfortunately, these fatalities only represent a small part of the overall impact of substance misuse on Americans. The long-term consequences of substance misuse affects not only individuals, but also their families and communities. The evolving patterns of substance misuse, coupled with a growing incidence of polysubstance use, make the situation even more challenging. The surge in fentanyl use, combined substance misuse, and overdose deaths underscores the need for educational initiatives that enhance understanding of substance use disorders and improve the identification, treatment, and management of these conditions.
